breathe function problem..

I searched breathe function from user reference. But there is not enough
information for me to use the function. I want to know the detailed processes to
do that. For example, what is the white boxes in the picture? Is that a dummy?
How can I expand my character by using the white object? 
I need more detailed information for breathe function.
