Problem opening old .max files

Hi, i was working on 3D s max an year ago... and i saved some max files then. I
just didnt save the objects in 3ds format, i rather just copied the .max files
from the 3dsmax/scenes/ directory to my personal folder. Now an year later i
again wana open and work  on the same files but i cant open them. I have tried
all the versions 6, 7 and 8 but each time i get an error about missing dll files
and then when i click "open" button on the error window, i get an
other windows error giving the message "error: cannot open file".
