.MAX is the default 3dsmax file format. I don't understand why you can't
reinstall your applications that you own after reformatting the hard drive...
that makes no sense.
The reason for the DLL error is that the file may have had a custom plugin or
other older plugin that was part of an object modifier stack which is no longer
available in your setup. You need to remember what that plugin was and see if
the plugin is either available for the older 3dsmax you have or for a newer
version you may be running.
