Re: Problem opening old .max files

your files opens okay but apart from the one material that is not there. 

you should be able to reinstall the max software without no problems at all
unless you get an error message example "please enter a authorization
code" or something like that. 

as for formating the hard drive that is a last resort never format your hard
drive unless you really need too.

try using the add/remove in the control panel removing all the max files close
the add remove and the control panel down. g
o to the start search file and folders type in 3ds max and delete them .search
again look also for autodesk delete that files. restart your computer and
install the software. but before you do this i would backup your files on a dvd
or dvd. you will loose them.
