I have no idea with so many hardware options and variants of cards, which card
is the faster. You'll have to get comfortable with the idea that you read the
specs, look up some correlation / user feedback, then make a wild guess and
pray.
I don't even have any hardware from the past 2 years. Last thing I bought was
probably the 8GB RAM or the 5 SCSI drives. My video card is very old now. So
is the rest of my computer.
As I said, the video RAM is mostly for textres. 256 is fine for low res texture
and wireframe display. 512 is better if you plan on using textured display. I
almost never do for very long, so I don't care much about that stuff. I work
mostly in wireframe and render tests.
Unlike most people, I usually buy the fastest, best, most expensive, and use it
for 3 years, but I know some people who buy cheaper, slower, and replace it
more often. You have to decide.
