Try adding an Exposure Control, e.g. the logarithmic exp. ctrl. and 
increase the image brightness there (try a value of 90). This will 
affect both rendering and viewport.

Also, for a single light bulb in a box, you might want to turn on global 
illumination (Final Gather if you render with Mental Ray).
