I know there are other methods but, I think it would be a nice feature to be
able to quickly choose a red, alpha etc. and save the channel, without
having to set render elements. It would be real cool when using .rla renders to
just grab a depth,normal etc.

i believe rendering to TGA allows for an "alpha split" as an option.
this
makes a separate file from the RGB.

Yes, TGA with Alpha Split. You can do both premultiplied and alpha split.
