ok, I've put alot of thought into this. Petar, if you are reading this...you
mentioned a strength in MR is in exteriors, that you can use very low
sample settings, possibly as low as 20. Question....wouldn't this seriously
produce the MR flicker problem, same as interior scenes? In any case, I've
found that you're right, exterior scenes DO work very well with mental ray,
maybe because the size of surfaces is smaller in the frame than in an
interior scene?
In any case, I think I'm actually looking at Light Tracer. I have to admit,
some part of me views using Light Tracer with RTT as a step backwards, and
I know, that's totally ludicrous. The fact is, it's a good, simple GI
calculation, which works well with rendertotexture. I've used MR quite
extensively, but never Vray. I know that Vray has beat the flicker issue, with
some kind of baked-into-geometry light information, a bit like radiosity.
However, I think I can still get a quicker render using baked light textures.
and mental ray sucks for that, we all know how mental ray and RTT don't
get along with each other.
It's still up in the air, but I think I'm goin' LT.
Jeez, it's a blessing and a curse that lighting in 3D has become so
complicated and choicey. I'm not complaining, but it's true that there are no
simple answers anymore.
