I would think bones are just objects as far as that's concerned although
I haven't tried it with max's built in crowd stuff.
I would think with rigs helper objects should be ideal. I've used rigs
in both pflow instanced geometry (very slow) and maxscript.
For the real deal with that stuff I'd check out andrew murdock's crowd
system stuff.
