Hi,
for as far as i know, you cannot light scenes using HDRI in 3DS Max when you are
using the "mental ray" render machine, when using the VRay renderer
you can though.
Another option would be, when using mental ray, to use exterior lighting
(daylight, or just lights - don't forget GI) and put a "fallof" in the
"reflection color" map of the carpaint material. When ur in the
falloff map, you have front and back, next to those you can dongle in an image,
it will reflect the image you have put in there, although i don't think u can
use an HDRI... you'll have t put in a JPG or Bmp or sumthin... mental ray and
HDRI aren't best friends...
