Which version of max are you trying to run?
Do you have SP2 installed for Windows XP?

Are your video card drivers up to date?


Are you able to create a Box:
1. Main Menu: Create > Standard Primitives > Box
(At this point the Create panel on the far right should show you the parameters
for creating a Box.)
2. Right-click in the Top viewport
(A yellow boarder will appear around the Top viewport.)
3. Click-and-drag from the upper-left toward the lower-right of the viewport.
Release the left mouse button and move the cursor upward. Stop and press the
left mouse button.

Did that create a Box object?
