Something else is going on.

I've replicated your material based upon the screen grabs and applied it to a
Super Spray.

I rendered using Scanline with any Object or Image motion blue, and then again
with Object and again with Image. Each time in the Render Frame window, the
Alpha was correct.

i'm with Mike on this. We've been stabbing in the dark. No, you are correct, a
premultiplied setting has nothing to do with your scene, but looking at the
first image you posted, it was not pos
sible to know if you were using bitmaps or procedurals to create the effect.

Ok.
Now, in the attache max 9 scene file, if you render frame 30 and check the Alpha
in the Render Frame window (the icon that is a black/white circle). You'll see
the Alpha is correct.

Next, what is different between what I did, and what you are doing. If I add
geometry to the scene (3 hidden Planes) the opacity is still correct.

Are you rendering the particles, then compositing them onto video or anothe
r animation in some way? There are many ways to do what we see in your first
image. The problem is, we are not sure how you are doing it. I'm not sure how
the Blobmesh is being used, or what material you have applied to it.

Yes, winzip the scene file, nevermind the background image, and post it here if
you can.
