To answer some of your questions, on the image of the mat editor I posted
previously, the 2nd sphere from the top is the material being applied to the
blobmesh, which uses the facing particles to generate the blobmesh. All the
objects in scene are being comped in max, with a video as the environment map. 

But I have a feeling it is something wrong with the program since I can see
nothing I am doing wrong. I can't get the alpha to work with other particle
systems either, unfortunatel
y. Max seems to view the opacity of the particles differently to the image's
alpha.

I tried opening your max scene, but a ton of dlls were missing since I am using
max 8. Sorry to be so awkward!

I am attaching the scene file if you want to look at it. Particles spawn at
frame 187. Thanks for taking up your time. Also I'm attaching a pic of a frame
with alpha channel to see what mine looks like. (Only 20% of the particles being
rendered coz I was too lazy to wait, but that's not import
ant.)
