It may not have locked up, just thinking.
How long did you wait? 5 minutes, 10 minutes. Depending upon your system and the
amount of particles, the calculations could take some time.
When working with particles, I always reduce the viewport display to the bare
minimum necessary to see what is going on. In the Modifier panel for PF Source,
you can set the overall viewport display as needed. And even quickly turn off
Enable Particle Emission when it gets in the way.
