Would you only need the particle animation (pos rot)...
Than you can also you pFlow to bake that animation out to the real 
objects. Check out bobo's site (scriptspot.com/bobo -> go with the flow).

I'm using pFlow alot to just generate the animation wich I can bake to 
my objects. Someday I'll write a scripted tool to do this.

But I think that's the best of both worlds, since animated shapes is 
indeed too slow to work with. But pFlow animations aren't all that bad 
really.
