Re: problems with refine connect (knight tutorial)

This is really a related question.

When I try to 'refine' the curve, the refine options are greyed out, even though
I've just been smoothing the curve per the tutorial.

Is there some step I did that removes the ability to refine?
Similarly, after smoothing and fillet-ing some points, I have lost the ability
of "Select and Move" to move points horizontally - they move
vertically which puts bad kinks in the curve.  Can't find what has constrained
the points to STOP moving horizontally.

Suggestions welcomed.
