While I can't give you a definitive answer regarding the architecture of
Exchange 2007 Web Services, I can tell you that I just did something like what
you are trying to do and have posted all the information that was helpful to me
here:

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, so please forgive me in advance, but
I'm very new, and just learning about Exchange Web Services, and in my study,
I've come across the following question that I'm hoping someone can help me
answer:

What is the difference between an Exchange Web Service Client Application and
an Exchange Web Service Proxy Reference? Are they used together to complete an
EWS solution?

I couldn't find the "Proxy Refrence" in the diagram found in the
architecture link given by MS at:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa579369(EXCHG.80).aspx

If I'm understanding how Exchange Web Services is supposed to work, I would
draw a diagram that would be something like:

[LOCAL BOX] [REMOTE Exchange Server
2007]

--------------------------------------
---------------------------------

| EWS Client Application  |     ------------->     | EWS Proxy Refrence |

--------------------------------------
----------------------------------

                                                                          |

                                                                          |

                                                                         V

----------------------------------------

                                                            | Client Access
Server Role |

                                                            | Exchange Web
Services |

----------------------------------------

In my case, I want to use EWS to locate all Calendar appointments assigned to a
list of e-mail IDs within a defined start/stop time & date. The data will
then be returned to the EWS Client application which will then call a 3rd party
application and pass the 3rd party application the results.

EWS Seems to be the right approach for this assignment, but I'm not sure if
every time you create a EWS Client application, you must also build/have an EWS
Proxy Refrence.

Thanks in advance for the guidance.
