operating system error: number=0x00000020 -

I am trying to create a pretty simple DVD, but keep getting the error message:

“operating system error: number=0x00000020 - The process cannot access the file
because it is already being used by another process.”

I get this error message when trying to render my motion menu. I have tried
building a DVD without the motion menu, but instead it seems to get stuck in
transcoding. (The status bar looks to be completed, but it then goes backwards
and continues with this cycle).

The DVD contents for this DVD include:
- A timeline which is about 24 minutes long.
- A menu created in PhotoshopCS2 with one button which was taken from the
library in Encore.
- An asset created in After Effects 7.0 which is the motion part of the main
menu (used for both video and audio).

I have rebuilt my DVD about 20 times, changing something slightly each time, but
I continue to get the same outcome. These changes include using different
Photoshop menus, using different motion menus, and using different videos for
the timeline. I have rebooted my computer and have had Encore as the only
program running, but still get the same error. I’ve also renamed projects.

I’m getting pretty frustrated, and could really use some help. I have seen
others have had this problem, but their solutions have not worked for me. Any
ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Amaris

Try this (from the Encore FAQ):

Symptom:
Transcoding keeps getting to 99% or so, and reverting back to 75% and continuing
Ad Infinitum in a seeming never-ending loop.

Problem:
The registry is corrupted.

Solution:
1. Close all programs.
2. Run Regedit.
3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Adobe -> Common.
4. Delete "Media Cache".
5. Restart computer.

Another possible culprit has proved to be an application called "FindSounds
Palette" and it should be uninstalled completely using the following
method:
Uninstall "Find Sounds Palette" (FS Palette).
Delete the two registry key folders for "Comparisonics".
Uninstall Encore CS3.
Delete Registry Keys for Encore.
Restart.
Re-Install Encore CS3.
Re-Install Encore 3.0.1 update.

Jeff,

Glad that this is in the FAQ. So far, it is the only error message, that I have
ever gotten in Encore. In my case, I used part of a previous Project to build a
new one. Some of the Assets from the previous set were used, and all had been
transcoded. I added new Assets and got the error message right off.

In my case, I probably took the long route, by Reverting all of my Assets,
Save_As, shut down, re-start and then everything worked fine. Had I been able to
find the Media Cache cure, it would have saved a few mouse-clicks. This was also
a couple of years ago, and was caused by my poor workflow. It would have been
easier to start a fresh Project and just Import those common Assets. Either way,
about the same amount of work, but with an error message.

I see that the "Find Sounds Palette" problem has been added. Just read
about that one, though it might have been from a very old thread.

Thanks for your work,
