Chinese Subtitles - getting the 'X' box

Certain Chinese characters are getting the "X" box (or the
I-don't-have-this-font character) on the subtitle. The weird part is that
everywhere else (text file, text indicator on the timeline bar) all characters
show up OK. The font in Encore is Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro, but it doesn't seem
to let me change it to another font.

That would make sense, then wouldn't it?

Although in the script SimSun is the font, Encore defaulted to Hiragino Kaku
Gothic Pro and will not let me choose another font. If I get around that hurdle,
do you know what common Chinese font can be used?
