Bill Gehrke has been doing some very good work in helping Premiere users figure
out just how well their machines are performing, and how they stack up against
other users' machines.
I'd like to add something to that thinking by pointing folks to a free test
program called Cinebench
<http://www.maxon.net/pages/download/cinebench_e.html>.

Here's the results of my first test, using the default settings for Cinebench
10. I hope others will also post so we can start to see some performance
comparisons.
Pentium 4 CPU @ 3.6 GHz
Windows 32 bit 5.1.2600
Radeon X700 Series x86/SSE2
Open GL Standard Test - 2983
Single CPU Render Test - 1924

I really don't know what the numbers mean, but mine are:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU X6800 @ 2.93GHz
Windows 32 bit 5.1.2600
Single CPU Render Test - 2988
Multiple CPU Render Test - 5685

I asked Maxon. What we need to know about the numbers is that higher is better.
God damn Steven, that seems a nice system! Your single core test was faster than
my double, even though your clock speed is much slower. I'd say the Core 2
architecture was a success.
And your double core test was more than twice as fast as mine.
