24p and Premiere

24p and Premiere
Tue, 25 Mar 2008 21:48:07 -070
Thursday is my first important shoot.

There have been some troubles with my setup of premiere pro and a matrox rtx.10.
I might even roll back to 6.5 which ran a bit better (thought not great...)

I want to use 24p so it can be output to film in the future, and edit in
Premiere (ideally in Matrox mode). I want to double-check that this is possible
in some way, as I can't find it in the documentation.

I have 3 options for shooting 24p on my camera (a canon XL2):

24p

24p 2:3

24p 2:3:3:2

Can Premiere /Matrox edit in all of them? What I see in the timebase window
choices is only 29.97 fps for Matrox and DV playback.

My understanding is that perhaps 2:3:3:2 allows me to edit in more modes (at
29.97 fps) including Matrox, and still output to 24fps later. Can anyone confirm
this?

From what I can see if I want to actually edit in 24p, I have to switch to Video
for Windows mode (the only mode offering that frame rate,) which I'm guessing
isn't taking advantage of either Premiere or Matrox.

I realize that there are 24p configurations which permanently corrupt some of
the 24 frames in a pulldown to video speeds. I don't want that.

My recollection is that I discovered on my research that when the time came,
Premiere/Matrox would be able to accommodate the 24p modes canon shoots in, but
I can't find any documentation of that.
