Adobe fonts disappearing??

I recently wiped out my PC and rebuilt it from scratch. It was running
Windows 2000, and is now running Windows XP. I downloaded & installed all
the latest Microsoft patches.

I imported all my fonts from my old FONTS folder, and everything seemed
great. Many are old Adobe Type 1 fonts from 1993. Everything seemed great,
then all of a sudden all my Adobe fonts disappeared. They will not show up
in Word, or any of my other applications, but they are listed in my FONTS
control panel.

At this point, if I tried to re-add Adobe fonts to my system, it will error
out saying the .PFM file is invalid or corrupt. Keep in mind that these
SAME files imported fine hours ago.

I spent hours trying to figure out what was going on, but decided to just
wipe out and restart again from scratch. I did that yesterday, and
everything seemed great. Then, all of a sudden, my fonts have again
disappeared.

I'm not sure what to think, or what to do at this point.

I have not installed Adobe Type Manager, and everything worked great before my
upgrade.

THe problem is that somehow, either you or some program, set Windows XP to
"show only TrueType fonts in the programs" on your computer.

Go to the Fonts Control Panel. Go to Tools=>Folder Options and click on the
"TrueType Fonts" tab. You will probably fint that the box "show
only TrueType fonts" is checked. UNcheck that box and click OK. The Type 1
fonts should then begin to show up in most if not all applications. (Some
applications, such as recent versions of Visio and AutoCAD chose to ignore
anything but TrueType fonts on their own volition.)

No it wouldn't.

Such a message would be received if you were missing the .PFB file that goes
with the .PFM file or if you tried installing a Multiple Master font.

The PFM file is defintely there in the folder I'm importing the fonts from. And
if I copy the folder to another XP machine, the fonts import fine.

I completely rebuilt my PC, and imported the same fonts from the same folder,
and they work fine for a short while, then stop.

It's almost as if something on my PC is somehow interfering with Windows'
ability to understand Adobe fonts. I have no idea what it could be, however. I
rebooted my PC 3 or 4 times yesterday after rebuilding, and it seemed great.

This AM I didn't install any new applications, but suddenly the Adobe fonts are
gone.
