| How do I use ATM? |

I recently downloaded a trial version of MathType (which I found out about on an
InDesign forum), and when trying to place equations I got the message that fonts
were missing. At the MathType website there is a link to an app that will
automatically install the fonts that it uses. However, when I ran it, it wiped
out all of my Windows fonts and replaced them - so I went from having around 400
to having around 30. I was able to copy the fonts back into the Windows fonts
folder, but they are still showing up as missing in CS3.
I am hoping to be able to use ATM (App: 4.1 Build 243 Lite) to somehow restore
these. However, I don't know how to use ATM, and there is no help menu, and it
isn't that intuitive (to a PC user, anyway.
Am I likely to be able to fix the problem with ATM, and where do I go to find
out how to use it?

Let's take a look at this one step at a time.

What is the name of the app, and does it have an available description?
>However, when I ran it, it wiped out all of my Windows fonts and

ALL of your fonts? Or only those with the same name? Which ones were
"lost" and which were "replaced"?
> so I went from having around 400 to having around 30.
That SOUNDS like what some font managers do, but usually at your
option. They take all your fonts and install them in groups when you
ask for them. Your major problem is with that application - have you
contacted them or asked for help on some on-line help forum for it?
>I was able to copy the fonts back into the Windows fonts folder, but

How did you copy them? Are they Type 1, Truetype, or Opentype? If Type
1, did you copy both the pfb and pfm files and then reboot? You should
never use the command line copy. In fact, to install fonts, you should
use Control Panel / Fonts / File /Install New Fonts and not copy at all.

What version of Windows are you using? If Vista, ATM is not
compatible. XP and 2000 don't need it to use Type 1 fonts, but if
you've already installed it, don't uninstall it. In any event, it has
nothing to do with the problem you've described. The only thing that
ATM lite does is help install type 1 fonts, which Windows 2K/XP can do
without ATM's help. If you're running Win9x/ME, then yes, you do need
ATM, and you CAN'T copy Type 1 fonts into the Windows fonts folder. It
just doesn't work that way.
> Am I likely to be able to fix the problem with ATM,
No.
> And where do I go to find out how to use it?
It really is very self-explanatory. Except for creating instances of
multiple-masters (which you're not doing), everything it does is very
self-explanatory - it only has 4 or five buttons! You tell it where
to put the fonts it installs (usually either \windows\fonts\ or
windows\fonts\psfonts - put all parts in the same folder), and you
select the fonts you want it to install by browsing folders and
clicking on the desired contents in the right-hand pane (the left-hand
pane shows the .otf and .pfb/.pfm fonts that are installed). It does
NOT work for .ttf fonts - only .pfb/.pfm and .otf.

3. No - I need to test the trial version, but I am on too tight a deadline to
spend a whole lot of time on it right now.
4. I used the install new fonts in the control panel, not copy and paste

That's terrible!
3. No - I need to test the trial version, but I am on too tight a

Asking here should take no less time than asking them.
4. I used the install new fonts in the control panel, not copy and paste
Too bad. It might have been a clue :(
5. I disagree. I know there are only a few buttons, but it isn't clear
what they do.
It used to include a very nice user guide. I just downloaded the
current version, and what's included is a help file, but for ATM
Deluxe, which is no longer supported!
Here's a mini-tutorial I found:
http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/fixfonts/ht/psfonts_win.htm
5b. Why is the destination list on the left instead of the right?
It just is. Maybe the original designer had just finished working with
Hebrew or Arabic software.
5c. Why are some fonts not visible, even though I can see them in
Windows Explorer?
A couple of reasons. ATM Light ONLY knows about Type 1 fonts
(pfb/pfm). Truetype fonts are invisible to it.
The fonts that are listed in an applications drop-down font list vary
from application to application.
Most Adobe products will display a one-for-one list of the installed
font files. MSWord and similar products such as Word Perfect display
only the basic family name, and let you access the bold, italic, and
bolditalic versions only indirectly, with a "B" button or by changing
properties. A side effect is that it's almost impossible to determine
whether you're getting a crafted bold or italic, or just a faux face
that's been created on the fly.
5d. Where, exactly, do I need to put the fonts?
Just where you've put them. Usually c:\windows\fonts\
The type 1 fonts CAN go elsewhere, but both Windows and the Adobe
applications need to know where they are. The ATM default, I believe,
is to create a completely separate folder as C:\PSFONTS and then IT
has a subfolder C:\PSFONTS\PFM. I change that preference to
c:\Windows\fonts\ for both.
Just some additional notes, to confuse things even further. When you
look at windows/fonts in Windows Explorer, you are NOT seeing a list
of files that are physically in that folder! Font FILES may be located
elsewhere, and pointed to either by shortcuts or by registry entries.
They will all show up in the explorer windows. The fonts directory is
