No OPA HW identifier / MAC address problem

I have a motherboard with an nForce chipset.  Ethernet works, internet is fine;
maya can't find any OPA hardware identifiers. lmhostid returns blank. In some
other forums I've seen reports that there's a bug in many nForce chips that
returns bogus MAC addresses at boot, which the forcedeth driver solves by
generating a valid one on the fly. This is a problem, obviously, since the MAC
will be different every time, and also seems to get the card registered as eth1
rather than eth0.

anyone else have this experience? i'm sure many people use nvidia motherboards,
this can't be insoluble.
