| imf_copy and .map files under Maya 8.5 OSX Intel |

I've been experiencing some real flakey behavior with .map files under Maya 8.5
OSX Intel. When I use imf_copy file.tif file.map under OSX and bring that into
Maya through a Maya file texture node, I get this error:
// Error: Image conversion (to IFF) failed //
// Warning: Failed to open texture file
/Volumes/files1/home/jeremy/Desktop/4071050.map //
However, it will still render the file texture.
If I try to convert the texture with useful options, ie imf_copy -p -r (either
one or both) file.tif file.map Maya crashes entirely with the console report:
Maya(16123,0xa000d000) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=1879052288) failed (error
code=3)
Maya(16123,0xa000d000) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
Maya(16123,0xa000d000) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
Sep 16 00:26:08 Joules crashdump[16201]: Maya crashed
Now, if I use the mentalrayTexure node, this all goes away, and the really funny
thing is if I run imf_copy under WINDOWS, and bring the .map files back over to
the Mac, they work perfectly fine.
I tried this and get the same behavior on several Macs. What gives?!
