I spent hours reading on gamma correction for use with mental ray for maya newer
versions, and I think I understand why textures look washed out (if that may be
your problem).
If this is your problem and if I understood it correctly theres two options for
correcting gamma when using textures.
1 Correct gamma on textures and everything (?) using the Framebuffer sections
Gamma slider to 1/2.2 = 0.454
&
Setting gamma to 1 in the lens shader that automatically is put on the camera
when applying the sun & sky system.
2 Try to gamma correct everyting with a gamma correction node, leaving
Framebuffer at default 1 and Lens shader at default 2.2.
This only seem to deal with the problem of whitewashed textures/images, but
seems people are left to the artistic skills to tweak stuff into
"realism" using well all the dam sliders lol.
