Im still not sure about the gamma thing, but they seem to talk about ungammaing
8bit texture images (that already have the usual gamma encoded into them), so
floating point textures, ramps and perhaps also color the usual swatches doesnt
need gamma correction.

I have little practical knowledge so again i might be wrong.

Sounds like maybe you need to tweak and try out different BSP settings in the
render globals. Maybe try out LargeBSP in the setting, like size=100, depth 39,
dunno really. Id try lowering the memory limit to 1.5 GB, to perhaps avoid it
from crashing.

If you have lots of big textures (hundreds of MB) in the scene you might want to
convert them to memory mapped textures with the imf_copy.exe files that comes
with maya, to have them loaded to virtual memory and not all into RAM.

Um, or just try rendering a few items and keep adding stuff to see if anyting
particular in the scene is making the render crash. Maybe avoiding reflection
and refraction depths over just a few rays depths.

Iirc, motion blur need special attention to BSP tuning, because the amount of
triangles may double multiple times.
