Hitting 1, 2, or 3 on subd while editing components in poly proxy mode

Hi everyone. Just starting out on Maya. I'm using 8.5 PLE on a PowerMac Quad G5,
4 GB ram, with an NVidia Quadro F4500. I've been searching the forums for info
on this but only found it in a post entitled "Re: Re: Re: SubDs Hand
lesson" by caldar Jun/09/05 - 21:13 (GMT) which confirmed that caldar was
having the same problem I am where changing the subdivision surface's display
resolution causes the polygon control shell to some how become dissociated from
the underlying NURBS. Nothing I do seems to fix this.

I can quite readily reproduce this. Create a subd surface. Go into polygon proxy
mode. Go into component edit mode. Hit 1, 2, or 3. After this the control mesh
no longer affects the surface.

Is this a bug? Or is it a known and deliberate behavior? Why would changing a
display parameter affect the model? And is there a way to "reattach"
the polygon shell to the nurbs? I'd hate to be a hundred hours into a subdivis
