| Connecting Palm modems back-to-back |

Before going after writing a serial exchange library to
"beam" PDBs over a serial link, I tried connecting 2 Palm
IIIxe over a serial link. First through their cradle
connected with a null-modem, then, for greater distance,
through Palm modems linked with a crossed-over 2-wire
telephone cable.
Using PalmTerm, I was first able to exchange characters,
but when I switched to the modem setup, nothing worked.
I then tried sending AT commands, but since I don't even get
an OK, it was no surprise i did not succeed sending
ATD (dial) or ATA (answer) codes to force the modems to connect without a dial
tone.
Has someone tried this before? Did it work?
My next attempt should be to build a phone line simulator:

AT commands, this seems pretty useless :(
