GUI-errors and freezes

GUI-errors and freezes
Sat, 05 Apr 2008 16:31:46 +020
Hello!

Since I reinstalled CDR 11 I suffer from serious GUI-errors and frequent
program-freezes:

- some GUI-elements like the rubber-bands or th tiny up- and
down-buttens inside some resize-fields are missing completely
(see this pic: http://de.tinypic.com/view.php?pic=23vep0&s=3 )

- some dialogues are missing nearly all buttons / GUI-elements and even
their command-buttons (like close) are displayed oddly
(see this pic: http://de.tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2najuhf&s=3 )

- the close-button for a drawing isn´t shown if the respective window is
maximized

- when changing the tool all GUI-fields that show measures and units
flicker for quite some seconds and the whole program freezes
(see this pic: http://de.tinypic.com/view.php?pic=25oxezd&s=3 )

- when changing to another application and back the GUI stays blank for
some seconds before it is built up (except some elements that stay missing)

and so on, and so on...

The problem was *not* fixed by a re-install.
The problem was *not* fixed by resetting all user-configs
(press-F9-during Corel-Startup-trick).

The problem does affect Draw and PhotoPaint (I don´t know if the other
apps are affected as well as I rarely use those).

The only difference between my current installation(s) and earlier ones
is that I recently install VBA along with the other components.

But my own VBA-code can´t be the culprit either because there isn´t
any, yet :-)

Is this a known issue?
Does anybody else suffer from glitchy or missing GUI-elements in CDR and
CPT?

System-Info:
Win XP Pro, 2 GB RAM, ~20 GB Temp-space (on separate partition),
Athlon64 X2 4600+, Radeon X1950XT
*No* known issues with other applications!

Many thanks in advance!

Just from curosity, do you happen to have an Nvidia based grephics card?
The symptoms sort of match problems with video drivers for certain Nvidia
based cards.
If so the usual fix is to revert to the Microsoft SVGA drover, uninstall the
Nvidia driver and utilities,
then reboot, run an Nvidia Cleanup utility, then reboot again and install
the current driver you downloaded from NVidia.

Try resetting XP's display theme. Right click on the desktop>Themes tab.
Change it to something else and then back to what you've been using. I've
been having this problem with X3 and it fixes it for a while here.

No, I am using an ATI Radeon X1950XT graphics card.

On re-reading the previous posts I just found one by Bob Weaver back
from 12-07-2007 ("Strange Workplace Issues").

He in turn quotes an 11 months earlier post but the links seem not to work.

Perhaps these two people suffered from similar issues?

Is there a way to retrieve the mentioned old posts?

Harald

Problem resolved - 1000 thanks to CraigM!!

Hello, CraigM,

I just tried your suggestion and it worked perfectly!

(I had to wait for the error to occur - yesterday all was well...)

Today I suffered from aforementioned GUI-glitches.

- I switched the Windows-Theme
- I switched back to my normal Windows-Theme
- now the GUI looks and reacts as it should

-> Many, many thanks for your solution!

Best regards from Germany
Harald Dehner

P.S.: Does anyone have a clue as to *why* CorelDRAW suffers from GUI
glitches until you change/revert your Windows-Theme!?
