Editing across pages

Editing across pages
Sun, 27 Jan 2008 00:31:53 -050
Hi everyone,

I have a CorelDRAW 12 file with several pages (six of them to be exact).
I have a layer called "Layer 1" on each page. In the first five
pages, there are objects in Layer 1 as well as in other layers.

On page 6, I have moved everything out of Layer 1 into other layers.

So just to be clear, on page 6 I have several layers. All the layers,
except for Layer 1, have objects in them.

Now, since Layer 1 on Page 6 is empty, I want to delete Layer 1 on Page
6. But I get a message that all the other Layer 1's, on the first five
pages, will also be deleted, and indeed they do get deleted if I delete
the Page 6 Layer 1.

I understand (I think) that I need to right click and uncheck "edit
across all layers." I do check that option, but it doesn't stick.

In short, then, how do I accomplish what I want to do? I want to delete
Layer 1 on Page 6, without affecting the Layer 1's on the other page.

Incidentally, I have tried to rename the Layer 1, but if I do all the
other Layer 1's change their name in the same way.

Thank you.

Stanley

  Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply.

I wish I had the capability to change layers independently on individual
pages, but CorelDRAW is still a good program.

Hi Chris,

Here is how the function would help me:

As I produce my work and I get to a point that I know is good, I
occasionally like to copy everything that I have to a new page.

Then I may rearrange the layers to combine certain objects in one layer,
or remove other objects from one layer and put them into a new layer.

But if all the layers always and only move together, then I lose this
flexibility.

Hello Stanley, hopefully someone with more knowledge than I will also
answer you. I don't think you can do what you want to do with CorelDraw
12. The nee CorelDraw X4 allows you to have individual layers on
different pages. In CorelDraw 12 if you delete a layer it will disappear
on all pages. I think "Edit Across Layers" only affects what you can
do
on any individual page. If you switch edit across layers off then you
can't select objects on a page unless they are on the current layer.

Hope this helps,

Hi Stanley, it seems many people feel as you do which is why the feature
was introduced with CorelDraw X4. I'm curious as to how that would help
you. For myself I mainly use CorelDraw to make Flashcards and Worksheets
for children. I separate layers by function - usually one for images and
one for text - so I want the same layers to appear on each page. X4 has
a duplicate page function which allows one to copy layers with or
without objects but the new design means that when one makes a new page
in X4 a new layer 1 is created each time and all the old layers are
lost. The new X4 has the capability you want but regarding layers is
actually a step backwards for me. I'd prefer it if there were an option
to set how whether new pages keep the old layers or not, depending upon
user preference.

Best wishes,

Chris
