David,
You can install X3 or X4 side by side with older versions and all works
well. The only change is that choosing to Edit a bitmap in Draw will go to
the last version of PHOTO-PAINT installed.
Corel did not remove RAVE to "make more money". Plain and simple it
didn't
measure up to the other members of the suite. They removed it because it
wasn't very good. Now their developers can focus more attention on Draw and
Paint.
As for your bitmaps, it almost sounds like they have had their masks
inverted. If you edit them in PHOTO-PAINT, what do you see?

Howdy folks, I have bitmap images playing up Corel 12. Mainly (but not
always) when I have converted to transparent back ground and edited in PP.
The image can simply disappear. Sometimew the transparent mask is left
behind and actual bit you should see has gone. I just threw out a job that
cost me $500. I sent the Corel file to the printer with images in place.
Checked it about 1000 times. Got back a job with images missing. Open the
Corel file and sure enough they are missing. I can still see them in
wireframe view but they are completely empty/ transparent as if they were
deleted.
Also can anyone tell me the effect of installing X3 and NOT deleteing
Version 12 first. Corel 12 has a program called RAVE and I want to keep it.
Seems Corel want to make more money and their X3 and X4 Graphic Suite no
longer includes this very useful animation program.

David,
I don't have any more suggestions for the problem.
But re-importing PDF files to CorelDRAW as a test, is not a great idea. The
import may be perfect, it may not be. But regardless of those results, the
PDF could PRINT fine.
As for RAVE competitors that blow it away, there are many. My first choice
would probably be SwishMax.

Thanks for that Foster.
I have just nailed down the mechanics of one cause. The file is looking
fine, Im essentially finished working on it so publish to pdf for printer.
Still in corel - now if I zoom in the bitmap disappears and zoom out it
reappears. bitmap is now stuffed, nothing else on the whole document has an
issue. If I print it the print preview shows all images (nothing missing)
but prints with images missing..... very confusing.
I have since found that this occurs when I publish to pdf and only with 1
specific setting. How can publishing to pdf cause an image error in Corel
Draw? I would have thought that the source corel file was totally
independant of any file you might create with it. Plus it only happens to
bitmaps that I have converted with transparent background. The specific
pdf publishing settings are - what ever you like + COMPATIBILITY =>
Acrobat 5. Same settings and Acrobat 4 compat and its fine. what The? The
only way to tell if an image has been corrupted is to zoom in beyond 300%.
Is that bizarre or what?
I have removed Corel 11, 12 and a trial of X3 from my system, fresh install
of 12, still does it. X3 does it as well.
With all pdf files I create for print I double check the file by pulling it
back into Corel Draw. This enables me to check that all colours are still
CMYK, nothings gone missing, all cut marks still there etc etc. I have a
corel file that is corrupted by the process of publishing to pdf with
ACROBAT 5 compat but oddly the pdf file looks fine in Acrobat Professional
or Reader. When I import the file back into CD its totally stuffed,
outlines shoot off in a million directions etc different set of issues yuet
again.
Crazy....
ps. I think RAVE is brillant, there must be some other product out there
that corel can't compete with then, any odeas what it is?. Vector base ani
gif creations incredibly easily, it is almost a plugin of Draw it is so
easy.
