Hi Rod,
It's not broken, it's going the wrong direction. (I know, this one got 
several of us, too.) Using your Shape tool, select all the nodes in the 
problem curve. In the context menu, you'll find an option to reverse the 
curve direction. It should combine fine after this.
Another option is to trim the outer curve w/ the inner.

Rod, before combining, reverse the direction of the inner curve.

I may be missing something here, but logic seems to have flown out the 
window.
I have a single letter lower case g, and want to make it a solid color. It's 
been converted to curves and combined, but the centre of the g remains 
colored. I've tried saving it and redoing, using the centre to trim the 
letter, I've broken every node and resealed, I can't find any non 
continuance of path and yet it still won't give me a colored letter. Am I 
losing it here?
