| Gradient fill and trim |

I am trying to create a logo from an ellipse which has a radial fill. The
idea is to cut out letters so that I end up with two parts - an ellipse with
letter cutouts (a stencil effect) and the letters - that if put back
together would make a seamless, solid elipse again.
Making the stencil part is easy using trim. Making the letters is difficult
as if I trim away the excess ellipse the fill in the remaining letters
alters so that it will no longer match up if I place the letters back into
the stencil. I can mimic the correct effect by making a mask to cover the
ellipse and leave only the letters showing. This however means that I can't
position the letters over any other graphics as the mask shows. I have tried
converting the letters to a bitmap and removing the background in Photoshop
but the bitmap conversion process alters the colour of the letters.
What I need to do is fix the fill in the ellipse without converting to a
bitmap so that I can still work on it with trim etc. Any ideas much
appreciated.

The attached file shows the problem where I have cut out a letter "J"
and reinserted it back into the ellipse. You can clearly see how the
fill has altered in the letter and does not match that of the original
ellipse.

Look at the attached example
Select the left filled ellipse and powerclip it inside ellipse with j
shaped hole.
Select the right filled ellipse and powerclip it inside the J shape.
Give resultant powerclip object no outline.
The bottom shape shows the result.
