Allan,
The rectangle must not be altered before rounding the corners. It helps 
to draw a guide object and then copy it to a specific location relative 
to the first. Then you can use your snap to object feature to draw the 
rectangle.

    That's what I've found. Once you have the corners rounded, you can
stretch the rectangle by converting-to-curves and moving 4 of the nodes.
