There is no white ink. There is only cyan, magenta, yellow
and black. White is achieved by not placing any ink and
letting the white color of the paper show through. In effect,
coloring anything white is an instruction not to print that
thing. Of course, if you use colored paper this remains true
but the result of not printing white text is visible colored
paper (as opposed to visible white paper). Light colors work
similarly to white. The lighter the color the less ink is
put down and the greater the admixture to the color of white
light scattered or reflected from the paper. This is what
happens when you want to put down pale blue in a sky for
instance. Some colors, such as yellow, are intrinsically
bright so that printing with less ink effectively desaturates
them without causing any brightening.

Don't put the text down as white text. Instead, place it as a
selection. Then use the selection to with the Delete key to
make a text-shaped hole in every layer of your card image. Now
deselect and print the whole thing over again. The area of the
text will be white because in every layer there will be a hole
where no ink is place and that shows the underlying paper.

I printed a complex birthday card but was dismayed to find one small
but unacceptable error, some missing text. So I just want to print
this plain white text on top of the existing card. But I'm darned if I
can do it. I added the text, ensured it was precisely in the right
place, and did several trial runs in b/w to get the positioning
correct. I deleted the raster layer so all I had was the text. But the
printer treats it as if there is nothing there! What fundamental
mistake am I making please?

Thinking you have White ink.
White text or white even is Just a lack of ink on white paper Likewise Light
or pastel colours are created by placing the colour dots of ink well spaced
with white. Normally the white text would be a empty space on the print If
you Now have Background image where that would be there is no way you can
get it back Perhaps You can get away with another colour(but not a Light
one).

Thanks (for both posts). Very grateful, as that's been driving me
nuts. I thought perhaps it was only 255,255,255 that played this
vanishing act, but my 254,254,254 was just as invisible. Now
understand why!
I'll tackle it tomorrow using your suggestions. Quite a performance
though, for printing white lettering on a dark album page.
