First, templates that you make (as opposed to those that came
with PSP) should be saved to the folder My Documents\My PSP8
Files\Print Templates. That way you won't confuse the two.

Second, it's hard to say what the problem is since you haven't
described exactly what you are doing. A few guesses about the
problem might be trying to overwrite a template that already
exists, trying to write to a Read-Only template, giving the
template an invalid file name, or saving a template with images
but with images that no longer exist (e.g. because they have
been deleted outside PSP). Try setting the File Locations in
File > Preferences to point to the folder I mentioned and make
sure it is also the folder that is selected in the Save To
droplist. See if that helps.

As far as I can tell, the templates are displayed alphabetically
by column. In other words, the sequence begins at the top of the
leftmost column and works downwards to the bottom of the column
whereupon it continues at the top of the column immediately to
the right of the leftmost column, again in top down sequence.

It already seems to be alphabetical. At least that's how the
templates that come with PSP are ordered. The exception is the
New template, which occurs at in the first place at top left
(and doesn't actually correspond to a file).

That's pretty well the message I get when I use Save Template from the
Print Layout dialog. Only recently started using this facility,
therefore probably user error, but so far haven't pinned it down. In
Preferences > File Locations > Print Templates, the Save To Folder is
set to
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Print Templates
which exists and holds many built-in pspscript files.

Why not save them to "My PSP Files" then you dont lose them when you
uninstall.

Does the save dialogue open for you to enter a name

Thanks both, appreciate the fast replies.

In fact shortly after posting I did change the folder to the one you
both suggested, but the message still arises. However, I've
established that:
- The template *does* get saved, despite the message
- The same message was being displayed when I *opened* a template, but
I discovered that was because the name of a very old template
(presumably from my experiments a few years ago) did not begin with
'MIPTemplate_Print_' like all the others.

BTW, in what sequence are the user defined templates displayed please?
Can that be changed to alphabetical?
