snap to grid

(PSP8 + XP + SP2)

In the past, I have had some success with the snap-to grid
and snapping to the grid.

In the past, I could set up the grid at, say 1/8" intervals
with an influence of a little under half that (in pixels),
and once I'd created an object, if I moved it around,
it would snap from one intersection to the next *while I moved it*.
This doesn't seem to correspond to what the Help says
about using <CTRL/SHIFT/G> to make it snap to the grid.
But it seemed to work.

However, just now I opened a new, empty image at 300ppi,
I set to the grid to .125"x.125" with an influence of 30px.
I then opened a second image,
resized it to a little smaller than 1/6 the size of the new image,
copied it, and pasted it (w/ <CTRL/E>) into the new image.
It came down in the middle, which was fine.

I then tried to move it to line up with one of my grid intersections.
I can get it *close*, but it always jumps a little
to the left or right of the vertical grid line in question,
and above or below the horizontal grid line in question.
That's either when I move the pointer right after it's pasted,
or after I deselect it, and use the mover tool.

And if I hit <CTRL/SHIFT/G>, nothing whatsoever happens.

Changing the snap influence up or down doesn't seem to help either.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong,
or what I might be overlooking?

Does this only work with vector objects, and not raster objects?

Snapping works with both vector and raster objects. Most likely this
behavior is due to setting inches for a process that PSP works in
pixels. At 300 ppi, 1/8" is 37.5 pixels. When PSP tries to put your
raster object on a pixel boundary, who knows which side of that
half-pixel line it will choose?

You'd best save inches for printing and scanning, where inches are
relevant. In the computer, the relevant measure is pixels. Set your
grid spacing to an integer number of pixels.

A second thing to watch is which corner of the rectangle is being
snapped? Or maybe the center of one side? PSP may not be snapping
the one you want if the size of the rectangle is close to the size
of the grid cells.
