I'm confused. Why not just place vector text and then apply
Inner Bevel to the vector text layer. It will be automatically
rasterized. You don't need a selection to run Inner Bevel when
there is transparency around your text.

You can also simply specify a pattern or gradient as the fill
material (background swatch) when you create the text. Any open
image will work as the pattern source.

It can also be effective to apply the Texture filter before
Inner Bevel to create the effect of a bumpy surface to the
text. Running the Sculpture filter before Inner Bevel can
also be useful.

It might be a plan to Google for "blade pro presets" to see the
kind of things people have come up with. This search will work

I agree - adding unnecessary extra steps and making sure you
don't explain their purpose always simplifies anything you
are doing :)

The user is new to all this, I made it simple.
The complicated stuff comes later :-)
