PSP has probably tried to exceed the 2 GB limit of address space
available to a 32-bit Windows program. We cannot tell because you
have omitted the size of your image. What are its width and height
in pixels, please? And how many layers of each type (background,
raster, vector, art media, and adjustment) are present? Is it RGB 16
bits per channel? 8 bits per channel?
Because of its Mac origin, Photoshop contains its own memory
management function, which allows bigger images and faster
processing than the Windows memory management used by PSP.
Increasing RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB would not help PSP, except
indirectly by allowing other programs to run from RAM at the same
time. It should not hurt, either. I suspect something else changed
to cause the error to appear. Can you recall any other changes?
Windows Update? New hardware? New or revised software?

I am running to some sever memory handeling problems with PSP X. Large
image file choke it and I can save. Or in the case of one scanned image
I can't rotate it I get this message"Executing FileOpen
Executing Rotate
------- Command Execution Failed -----------
Command Name: JGLDeformObject
Error Text: Not enough memory to complete this operation; close one or
more documents or applications and try again. If this does not correct
the problem, you may need to adjust your memory settings or work on a
smaller document.
------- Command Execution Failed -----------
Command Name: Rotate
Error Text: Not enough memory to complete this operation; close one or
more documents or applications and try again. If this does not correct
the problem, you may need to adjust your memory settings or work on a
smaller document.
Executing FileClose"
When I tried to save another version of the same file that I had taken
into PhotoShop 7 and rotated, I get a not enough memory message when I
tried to save it first after I had worked on it for awhile, later after
I rebooted and reopened PSP X I opened the file did nothing with it and
tried to save as and got the same message.
Before my husband upgraded the ram from 2gigs to 4gigs I didn't have a
problem.

This is large, but not over the max for PSP. 9,572 x 11,964 pixels =
114,519,408 pixels. The background layer alone takes three bytes per
pixel in 8-bit RGB (or is it 16-bit RGB, twice as much?), thus
343,558,224 bytes or 335,506 KB. As soon as you try editing, PSP
needs internal storage of four bytes per pixel, increasing the total
to 782,848 KB. A selection would add one more byte per pixel, making
the total 894,682 KB.
I repeat my questions because their answers will probably tell us
whether this should work: how many layers of each type (background,
raster, vector, art media, and adjustment) are present? Is it RGB 16
bits per channel? 8 bits per channel? If answering these is too much
trouble, we will quit here.
Please go to Help > About Paint Shop Pro > System Info and check
whether PSP is seeing the full 2 GB of available physical memory. A
memory card could have failed or come loose.
Open the Windows Task Manager and look for other programs using lots
of memory. Close them.
I assume you are scanning a print, not a negative. 200 DPI will get
all the information in most prints. The very finest grain paper,
carefully printed on the very best enlarger from an excellent
large-format negative might require 250. 1200 DPI is overkill, a
huge waste of your time and CPU memory. Even 300 DPI is fat. Do
yourself a favor and get that scan size down. The memory requirement
goes up as the square of DPI, you know.

If you are scanning a photographic print or a magazine image
this is way, way, way too high a scanner resolution setting.
Since the memory use depends on the *square* of the resolution
you are really shooting yourself in the foot. While Photoshop
is well known for its ability to cope with large images because
it has its own virtual memory system, PSP uses Windows virtual
memory, which is much less efficient because it is not tightly
integrated with the program. For some commands (such as Rotate
and Deform) PSP seems to have some built in limits too. If
you are scanning a slide then the resolution is roughly four
times too small. However, because of your comment that you
"reduced the resolution to the 300 I normally used" and the
image dimensions I don't think you are scanning slides. If
you don't believe me when I say you are accumulating useless
memory-eating dots by scanning at too high a resolution (i.e.
1200 ppi for an 8 x 10 inch original) please review the
recommendations at Wayne Fulton's Scan Tips web site, found
here http://www.scantips.com. In scanning more is not always
better and the optimal results are obtained when the scanner
resolution is chosen in relation to the material you are
scanning. Unless it is is some kind of point of honor with you
to make PSP work with the largest possible image (and it is not
very good at that) I would suggest you pick a resolution that
is sufficient but not excessive. 200 ppi is probably just fine,
or use 300 ppi if you're feeling paranoid. I also suggest aligning
the image carefully to avoid rotating it since small-angle
rotations can lead to unnecessary image degradation. There
should be no reason rotate by 90 degrees if you place the
original on the platen with the correct orientation.

The image was 335519K with 1200ppi resolution (just got a new scanner)
and 9572p X11964p. Before trying this image I had been having the
occasional memory problem this file has just made it worse. I reduced
the resolution to the 300 I normally used and it still didn't like it.
Suprisingly Painter has no trouble with it as well as PSElements 3 which
I have had to resort to though I don't care much for the program.
This is a photo restore job I'm working on.
