I do not know how Snagit can provide a better image than PSP when doing a
screen capture, but perhaps it does some kind of image improvement. In any
event, you won't get a better screen capture from v.X than you do from v.9,
so I see no reason for you to upgrade. I've stuck with v.9 myself as I
don't seen anything in the Corel versions to make an upgrade worthwhile
(and I see things in v.XI and X2 that make it completely undesirable to
"upgrade").

The captured image isn't sharper. The difference happens only
when you insert the image into another app, i.e. WP. My guess
is that PSP 9 and SnagIt place different values for the print
resolution in the image information and then WP interprets that
information. It's easy enough to check. Do a screen capture with
both methods, opening the SnagIt capture in PSP (or pasting it
in). Then do Image > Image Information and note down what is
present in the Resolution field. You can change the resolution
to anything you want at any time without affecting how the image
looks on your screen in PSP or any program that doesn't attempt
to simulate a printed page. Just do Image > Resize, uncheck
Resample Using, type in the Resolution you want, and press OK.

I don't think the version of PSP is the slightest bit relevant.
It's more important to understand the details of what is going
on.

A screen capture is a (pixel) screen capture. If Snagit does better
than PSP, it must be "Smart-resizing" to a higher pixel size after
capture. You can do the same thing with PSP, either manually or with a
macro.

If I do a screen capture with PSP 9 and another with SnagIt; then copy each
to a WP document, the SnagIt image is sharper. Would PSP 10 improve this?
I have been a PSP user since version 4. I recall seeing "You are now in day
1005 of your 30-day trail". That's when I bought the product!
Should I spend money upgrading to 10?
I use screen captures to illustrate books on computer apps.

No, there is no "must" about it. It's quite possible that
WordPerfect is downsizing images for instance, either smartly
or stupidly. WordPerfect might even have a less than perfect
image interpolation algorithm.

WordPerfect is a page editor oriented to printed documents. In
all likelihood it is using the image resolution to decide the
size of the image in inches on the page. At least this seems
like an excellent hypothesis until such time as the original
poster reveals exactly what he is doing and investigates the
properties of the images.
