Hi, I'm using v7.04 and often when I click to select my Shapes, they begin
to load quickly then I get the Error Box that says
"Access denied" to unknown file..or something similar. It happens
about 90% of the time. If I try to continue by selecting a different type
Tool, the whole painshop program just freezes up!
I've perused the file ext in the shapes folder, they're all the same .jsl,
I'm using Win XP, have 512 mg of ram, and have been using psp 7.04 for about
6 months now.
I've done web searches to no avail so any help from the group will be
appreciated.
Thanks, Pat

How similar?

It's possible that the problem is not one with the shape files
themselves but with the cache file which contains pre-rendered
pictures of the shapes for rapid selection in the tool. The
cache file is usually located in the Cache subfolder of where you
installed PSP, usually C:\Program Files\Paint Shop Pro 7\Cache.
The file will have the name Shapes.jpc. Shut down PSP and delete
this file and the related Styled Lines.jpc file. Then restart
PSP. When you switch to the Preset Shape tool the cache will be
rebuilt during a short pause. If the deleting the cache file in
this way doesn't fix the problem, then the difficulty might be
a corrupt shape file. You can try temporarily moving .jsl files
one by one out of the Shapes folder into some temporary folder
outside the PSP folder tree and checking if the problem has gone
away. If it does at some point then the last file you moved is
corrupt. Also, make sure that you have write permission to all
the folders used by PSP and that, if PSP was installed by an
Administrator account, you are running it as Administrator.

If the issue is not the shape files or their cache files, it might be
another common issue.
What I've found to work on my system for versions 7-X:
1. Exit PSP.
2. Exit all other running programs except security items, and Windows
itself.
3. In Windows, search for files like the following:
*.tmp or *.TMP
[Many times these build up from a single crash and the debris trips
more crashes. Windows will tell you which ones you cannot delete.]
4. Empty your desktop recycle bin.
[I noticed PSP crashes more when this has at least one item in it.]
5. Reboot your computer.
[Sometimes Windows needs a reboot.I usually do off and on rather
than "restart".]
The steps above clear up my issues when I do have them, but usually
dumping the trash before opening PSP prevents new issues.
This was first suggested back in PSP8 Beta group to clear up a
repetitive crash sequence for several folks. Apparently, PSP can get
tripped up by the old debris and crash which generates even more
debris......
