I just switched to a laptop, and discovered that the thing is remarkably
sensitive to stray touches and bumps. Inadvertently I've managed to mess up
a bunch of settings; the worst is that most of the icons on the left (fill,
erase, etc) aren't active.
I figured if I restored the default settings, things would be good again. I
tried using the miserable Help provided, and the at least equally miserable
web site help, and have hardly found any topics that even talk about
defaults of any kind, let alone restoring default settings (in spite of
dozens of suggested topics)
So I find myself here, asking people who probably think it's a silly
question:
How do I restore the program default settings?

Why did you decide to keep secret the version of PSP that you
are using? It makes it a bit difficult to give you advice.

It depends on what version of PSP you have. In some versions
doing File > Preferences > Reset Preferences and checking the
appropriate items will reset defaults. In some versions doing
File > Workspace > Load > Default resets some things to their
defaults (those things in which you seem to be interested). In
yet other versions resetting defaults is a simple as deleting
the PSP registry key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jasc in
the Windows registry and restarting PSP.

Perhaps you don't really want to restore the program default
settings. Maybe you only need to make all the toolbars and
palettes visible and on-screen with Ctrl-Shift-T. Who knows?
You have used many words in your post but have managed to
convey a negligible amount of information. Do you work in
marke ting perhaps?
