Can someone give me a rundown on the major differences between essentials 2
& 3? I received 2 with my tablet and don't have much time to download a
trial version of 3 to figure it out for myself - didn't see a comparison on
the corel website. Thanks very much.

While this is not an exhaustive list, PE2 is based on Painter 8 while
PE3 is based on Painter IX. As such, PE3 has many things that PE2 lacks
such as:
* Artists' Oils brushes
* Corel Photo-Painting System (to help turn your pictures into paintings)
* Multi-user compatibility
* Quick-guide
* Eraser tool (in addition to Eraser brushes)
* Cloner tool (in addition to Cloner brushes)
.... and more. The Trial download is free, you might want to take a look
at it.
