I have painter essentials 3, and love the handmade paper effect when I paint
over my flower photos. However, when I print the images on my HP photosmart
printer, the effect doesn't show up at all. Also, much of the detailed
color gradations get lost. This printer generally does an excellent job -
any suggestions as to how to bring out the detail or why it would get lost
in the translation from monitor to printer?

Might be your initial image size. Try to work for print at 300 pixels per
inch with the inch size close to what your final print size will be.
Painter will resize the image to fit the print medium (Size to fit) and if
you don't have enough pixels in the original image, the print process will
blur out any subtle detail.

Well, I've been printing 4x6 images, so I'm sure I have enough pixels!! My
original photos were shot at a size adequate to produce a good photo-quality
8x12, so unless essentials does something weird with the resolution of the
original photo, wouldn't there be adequate resolution? thanks for your
response!!
Also, when I post a question to this group, my post doesn't show up for
several days - is this usual? For example, my original post was on the 8th,
and today (the 12th) is the first time I've seen it - Tom, you responded on
the 11th, so I guess that's when it showed up.

Hi Carol,
To answer the second question first, I saw your post on the 11th because
that's the first time I logged into the newsgroup. Usually, posts are up
immediately in my experience. You can check this yourself by hitting
"F5"
on your keyboard to refresh your newsgroup reader. In my case, it's Outlook
Express in a Windows XP Home OS.
To answer your first question, Re: Resolution, you can have a 4 by 5 image
represented as 72 pixels per inch which will look fine on a monitor but will
not print worth a darn. I'm not an expert with Painter essentials, I'm
using Painter IX.5, but I would be very surprised if you could not resize
the image to 300 ppi, and make sure your printer is set to it's "Best"
mode
using glossy paper.
Hope this helps, all the best,
Tom
