clone painting script problem

clone painting script problem
Mon, 16 Apr 2007 08:47:49 -070

I am trying to do a technique I did for a job several years ago with Painter
..

I might be missing a step because I come up with the same result on
different versions of Painter 5.0 through 9 of both platforms (Windows and
Mac OSX).

I'm trying to record a script of my cloning brush strokes from a photo. Then
export the script out as a quick time movie or sequenced frames.

Everything works well until playback, as the brush defaults to the current
pattern. Even if I make sure the new file canvas has the clone photo
selected.

I just don't remember what else I did after saving the painted clone in
order for the playback to mimic what I just recorded with the proper brushes
and data. Currently it does do all the brush strokes and variants, not from
the cloned source however.

The icon in the script box shows the finished version of what I recorded.

Again, I've done this before with success, so I know there is a way without
so much hassle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brya

Hi Bryan,

>From what you describe, I suspect that you already had your clone document
created *before* you hit the record script button and began painting your
clone brush strokes.

What has happened is that information relating to your source document has
not been recorded in the script, so that although everything appears fine
when recording, on playback (even though you have the original clone source
document open and selected in the File> Clone Source menu), the instructions
are not present to select the specific clone source, so Painter reverts to
the default Pattern (which was the current selected pattern recorded with
the Record Initial State check box checked in the Scripts menu> Script
Options).

The magic command you need in the script prior to the first brush stroke
command is "Set Clone Source". This command also incorporates the
variable
of the name of your selected clone source document.

Assuming that you do not wish to record the initial creation of the clone
document in your script then this is what I'd do (with the Record Initial
State option checked);

1. In Painter, open your source document and create your clone document in
preparation of the first brush stroke.

2. Ensure that the source document is selected in File menu> Clone Source.

3. Click the record button in the scripts palette.

4. Select Current Pattern as the clone source in File menu> Clone Source...
this sounds strange, but trust me.

5. Reselect your original clone source document in File menu> Clone Source.

6. Begin painting with cloner variants of your choice in the clone document.

7. Click on the stop button in the scripts palette when done, and name the
script appropriately.

Note: if you are familiar with script editing, you can also salvage your
previous script by opening this new script in the Script List window,
selecting the collapsed Set Clone Source line, copying it, closing the
script, opening the previous script, and pasting the line immediately before
the first Stroke command line. If the clone source document source was
different in the second script, then click the triangle to the left of the
Set Clone Source command to expand it, double click on the expanded line
(which incorrectly begins with Variant in Painter IX.5) and enter the
required name of the source image document in the Set String dialogue.

NB. The original clone source document needs to be open in Painter Prior to
playing back the script, otherwise the recorded Pattern will again be
defaulted to as the clone source.
