how-to question
Wed, 13 Jun 2007 15:26:57 -040
I am new to the newsgroups and have a stupid question. When I want to reply
to a subject, should I use New Post, Reply, or Reply Group? Thanks.

Hi Shirley,

Use reply to group (reply to newsgroup) if you want everyone else to see
your reply posted on the newsgroup (have the message you wish to reply to
selected first).

If you want to reply privately to the sender of the message, use reply
(reply to sender). In this case, your message will not appear in the
newsgroup, and only the sender of the original message will be able to read
it (unless others have access to their private e-mail).

Sending your reply directly to the sender by mistake is not the end of the
world (you can repost to the new group), but depending on the content,
sending the reply to the newsgroup by mistake could be embarrassing.

I have had a couple of bad experiences where I once sent a private beta
group message to a public newsgroup, and while advising someone to hold down
the shift key, after sending the message, I had a horrible thought that I
had omitted the 'f' from the word shift (fortunately the 'f' was present).
