| Layers problem |

I am suddenly unable to paint on a layer. I can paint on a canvas layer or
duplicate layer, but when I open a new blank layer, I cannot paint on it.
To make it more frustrating, it only happend when I use oils or acrylics. I
can paint on an empty layer in watercolor.
Can anyone tell me how I can fix that? I dont want to uninstall and
reinstall my Painter X as I have some really nice brushes and custom
workspace in this one.
Someone told me Van Gogh didnt use layers, but I am no expert and miss my
layers!

Hi Shirley,
Do you have Preserve Transparency checked in the Layers palette? This needs
to be unchecked in order to paint on the transparent areas.
You could also try Restore Default variant from the Brush Selector Bar menu,
in case you have changed the brush to a type which cannot paint directly on
transparent areas of a default layer (Drip method for example).
The Watercolor category variants paint on a special layer which is not
effected by the Preserve Transparency option.

A problem I've run into on several occasions is that the "Preserve
Transparency" box shows un-checked, it behaves as if it is checked.
Checking and un-checking the box clears the problem up. This is in Painter
X.

I can confirm that behaviour. Same problem occurs with the "autoselect
layer" box. Even if unchecked it behaves like it is checked. Checking
and again unchecking it solves the problem.

Ditto on that here. Weird non-selection action going on with Text
entry-modification, which prevented me from stretching text much less
selecting it. I had to resort to using the Rectangular Selection, Cut,
Paste, Reposition, then Effects/Orientation/Distort - and then found out
that one doesn't have to use Distort on the newly-repasted item to squeeze
it to a more narrow look.
