| Thumbnail is missing in the Open File dialog box in Painter X |
 |
Wed, 13 Jun 2007 23:14:44 -050 |
Hello -
I am using Painter X with Windows XP. When I do a Control O to open a file
there is a thumbnail box that appears in the "Open" dialog box where
the
files are listed but the thumbnail for the selected file does not appear.
Other friends also using Painter X are experiencing the same issue.
Why doesn't the thumbnail appear? Thanks for your help!

Hi Steve,
There has never been a riff thumbnail preview for the Windows OS
and won't be until Corel releases the code so MS or another 3rd
party software developer can access it for inclusion in their product.
Painter's way of solving the problem is the clunky Preview.Pix file and
Browse feature. At least we have something, even if we have to be
rigorous about file maintenace for it to remain useful.
I've heard the Mac OS' have a 3rd party Riff viewer named Spolite or
something like that, but nothing for the Windows OS...yet.

I've found that the above is always the case, but I suspect this is an
aspect of Folder Options, in combination with the View.Apply to All
Folders - though I'm skeptical and don't have the time to fiddle today.
Does one really want Thumbnail view for every folder? I've found that if I
set View Thumbnails on a folder, Painter (all versions whether 6, 8, X, or
X.5) disregards this, and does not save my view choice (ie Thumbnails)
despite fetching from the same folder over and over. This IS a bit of a
pain considering that Painter is a GRAPHICS application, and people who use
it are typically poring over lots of graphic files from folders.
I can compare this to Word from Office 2000 - Try to insert a graphic from a
folder, or even fetch a .doc from a folder, and it's No Thumbnails 100%.
Considering that Office 2000 was out a few years before XP hit, this is
understandable. But a package just released?
Bad marks for OS integration on this level. Hope it gets fixed, ala a
setting/preference for how Painter views the contents of folders.

maybe you moved the .rif files, so the Painter-created preview file is
not in the same folder anymore?

Well, here's where the preview file method goes wrong: If one is for
instance scanning graphics to a folder, and not doing it from Painter, when
does the preview file get updated? When a file is saved from Painter, I
suspect. But it still doesn't enable thumbnail viewing in the Open or Save
folder. It all feels a bit like the old method WordPerfect used to utilize
to display a graphic on what would otherwise be a DOS screen; and most
likely ought to be replaced with something more current, if not an option to
use or not use the preview file (as opposed to the OS native capability).
Sure, there are still people out there who use versions of Windows other
than XP and Vista, and so the preview file method is a fair but (as above)
slightly flawed process; nonetheless it's all one has in non-XP/Vista
versions, except of course on the application level. Viewing Thumbnails has
been a part of the operating system for some time now, and should be a lot
simpler to enable a file menu (open/save etc) that has Thumbnails as an
option, directly from the OS, as opposed to a separate file that requires
third-party updating.
