Have you first selected an eraser variant from the Brush Selector Bar with
the eraser end of the stylus?

Well, no, actually. I've used this tablet for a couple years and never did
any eraser selecting. Whatever pen or brush I was using, if you turned the
pen over, it would simply erase in the past, then suddenly it wouldn't.
After much more fiddling around, I discovered that closing and reopening
Painter solved the problem, which is kind of strange. It sort of appears as
though it's a Painter issue since the pen erased just fine in Notepad.
At any rate, it's working now. Another of those unexplained mysteries, I
guess. :)
